A wiki is a collaborative website where members can add, delete and change the content as needed. Wiki’s can be used to brainstorm on ideas, create “work-in-progress” drafts, organize content, and provide participants with opportunities for interaction. The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit organization that maintains several wiki’s including one of the most well known, Wikipedia, a web-based collaborative encyclopedia project.
Wikipedia is one of the most extensive and popular wiki’s on the web. Many wiki clients allow you to create a "mash-up" of rich media such as video, audio, PowerPoint, RSS feeds, widgets and other social media into your wiki. Not only does this make your wiki more interactive, but it also allows you to offer a variety of media that supports the multiple learning styles of students.
How can a family use a wiki?
Parents or teens are the best to set up your family wiki but watch who edits it – you don’t want to post the family chores to your wiki and then have your teen suddenly reassign all chores to a little brother without your permission. Once it is set up every family member can go to the same wiki to see what the schedule is, what homework is due that day (as long as your child lists it) what homework has been completed, who is bringing the cupcakes.
We talk a lot about coordinating schedules and family activities. The old way of doing this is by using a big calendar, emailing your children, and texting between family members. The new, improved way of doing this is by using a wiki!
